Story Mapping

Story Maps are graphic organizers to help students focus on prewriting and postreading activities. Maps can focus on separate elements like character, setting, conflict, or resolution. Teaching students the plan or structure of a story leads to improved comprehension. The three basic elements of a story structure are setting, plot, and theme.

How can I use it in class?

  • Story Maps can help students summarize a story's most important points.

  • Students can keep a Story Map while reading as a purpose to read and document main points.

  • Teachers can supply a partially completed Map. Students can make predictions and fill in the Map.

  • Students can use Maps to organize prewriting for their own stories or media presentation.

  • Students can use Maps to organize a historical event.

  • Students can use illustrations instead of words to depict the events on the Map.
